Abstract

The work of the peruvian writer Alfredo Bryce Echenique has been the subject of multiple investigations from literary studies and social sciences, both in Peru and abroad. The peculiar narrative that it possesses is characterized, fundamentally, by the treatment of themes with Peruvian social representation, mainly, set in the second part of the 20th century. Another thematic line that he executes is the one that corresponds to the experiences of Latin Americans in Europe. The plot of his works transcends towards a social critique from the perspective of individuals who do not fit into their represented societies. To treat this narrative, he uses some novel strategies, such as orality, intertextuality, popular culture, and humor and irony. In this sense, this article analyzes the way in which Bryce Echenique uses humor and irony as effective strategies for the articulation of his first novel, A world for Julius. To do this, his own conception of humor in literature is investigated.
